My Music Chart: February 2018

Now that I have completely binged my way through the entire 'My Dad Wrote A Porno' podcast I am back to listening to more music again and it shows:

In addition, I have been trying to listen to more new music too, tracks that I didn't already have. It wasn't really a New Years resolution as such but as I've gotten a little bit older I have found it more of a challenge to keep up with what is 'new' in the music industry. Unfortunately, there are no shows like Top of the Pops and CD:UK to help with this anymore, so I decided to make a little more of a concerted effort to seek out new music.

17 out of 20 of the tracks in the chart this month are new entries, with half of them being songs that I have added this past month.

The top re-entry came from the Shrek 2 soundtrack and the version of 'Holding Out For A Hero' sung by Jennifer Saunders. It is potentially a song I am going to be using in a cabaret show so that explains it charting again this month.

The only track that was in last months chart was 'Lost On You' from LP which I wrote about in a fair bit of detail dropping 11 places and coming in at number 17.

Whilst trying to listen to lots of new music I have also been trying to keep it varied and have been listening to even more piano solos and soundtrack scores. None of the actual soundtrack scores made it onto the charts this month although the two piano pieces that did make it onto the chart are interpretations of music from a soundtrack.

You may have already heard of The Piano Guys as their videos quite often go viral with their stunning interpretations. Being a big Batman fan, their piece called 'Batman Evolution' has always been a favourite, touching upon the original campy TV series, the Burton era of movies and finishing up with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy as well morphing into somewhat of a mash-up. The original (and brilliant) video was removed due to a copyright complication but thankfully there is a version still lingering around. Give it a listen, it's awesome:

Whilst I am talking about soundtracks, I just wanted to put in a little mention of the track that snuck in at Number 20 on the chart too. Michael Giacchino is becoming a force to be reckoned with when it comes to creating the perfect movie soundtrack and also showing how versatile he is. His work for Disney Pixar's 'Inside Out' is nothing short of stunning and the track that opens the movie 'Bundle Of Joy' is beautiful. As I am sure you are now well aware, I am soon to become a father so I listened to the opening a few times as it seems to perfectly sum up that new birth feeling. I'll let you know if that is still the case when the baby gets here.

Now, where to start with all the new tracks...

Coming in at number 19 is 'Breathe' from Jax Jones and featuring Ina Wroldsen. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is a generic dance track when it starts but I absolutely love it lyrically and melodically. I think it is actually cleverly simplistic which lifts it out of the generic dance category and the video is stunning to watch too:

Next up at number 16 is 'Let Me Down' featuring Stormzy by Jorja Smith. First off, it opens with a simple yet beautiful piano intro which is always guaranteed to pique my interest. Jorja has a beautiful vocal tone and range which makes this so easy to listen to. The video is also incredibly shot with a very dark undertone.

Can we also just take a moment and revel in the fact that Kylie Minogue is back and with new music! It seems like forever ago that Kylie brought us a solid pop floor filler for an album so I have very high hopes for the new album 'Golden' that is coming. Especially after I heard the first offering taken from the album called 'Dancing'. Initially, I was taken aback when the track started because it has a very strong country feel to it. Kylie does country music? I'll be honest I wasn't sure how I felt about this but as the track builds and then the chorus drops it is clear that she has done it again. Kylie has always liked to play around with genres and this is no exception. A country-infused pop thumper that would definitely have me bouncing around a dancefloor like I was still 21.

You'd recognise the number 6 track 'Write My Story' by Olly Anna as it was recently used in a cereal ad campaign. It is a brilliant song with an unusual arrangement which works for me. My only criticism is that at just over two minutes in length, it isn't long enough for me!

Coming in at Number 5 is Dua Lipa with 'IDGAF'. I had never heard of this artist before and discovered it just browsing through iTunes but this song instantly had me hooked and I downloaded the whole album. 'IDGAF' is a classic 'up-yours to a cheating ex' song. The irony here is the title and the main refrain of the song is that she doesn't give a f*@k. So much so that she wrote a whole song about it. I've always found it amusing when artists take the time and effort to write a song which tells of how much they don't care because that's what you do when you no longer care, you write a song. Obviously I jest, this is a fantastic track:

'Rude' from Magic! was another accidental find as such. I only came across this because of a viral video. The video was a very creative way in which the main guy proposed to his girlfriend. Hey, I have no shame here. I love videos that have such happiness, I'm a romantic! The soundtrack of the video was this song 'Rude' which became an instant earworm so I ended up downloading it and listening repeatedly, hence it coming in at number 3:

Another ear-worm came from Camila Cabello feat Young Thug, with 'Havana' which came in at a joint number 1. Again, a relatively simple song but it is so irresistibly catchy. I love it.

The other track joining 'Havana' at the top this month is 'Bitch I'm Everything'. If I am honest, I have no idea how I came across this track and it is beyond cheesy but I love it. I think it was in a drag queen performance video or something and it just works. It's a great track for those getting ready pre-drinks.

And that pretty much sums up my month. Here is the full chart listing:
